From Naples you can see the brooding Mt Vesuvius in the distance, and this is your first objective – trek to the top and visit the Museo dell’Osservatorio.

A little further south you can witness the devastation caused by the world’s best-known volcano disaster in the Roman town of Pompeii. Take a ferry or hydrofoil from Naples direct to Stromboli, the dramatic volcano-island in the Aeolian group off northeast Sicily. This is possibly one of the most stunning places in Italy to spend a night or two, especially if the volcano is rumbling!
While in the islands you could visit volcanic Vulcano, with its crater and mud baths, the pumice mines of the main island, Lìpari, and the grottoes of distant Filicudi. From Lìpari board a ferry for Milazzo or Messina, from where you can travel south in the shadow of Italy’s most powerful volcanic symbol, Mt Etna, to the city of Catania, with its unique buildings made of local lava stone. A visit to the brooding Mt Etna itself, perhaps including a guided trip to the nearby Valle del Bove to trail the most recent lava flows, is a must. Ferry connections from Catania facilitate the trip back to Naples.
