LONELY PLANET'S OFFICIAL ITINERARY INFORMATION

Itinerary: Skyscrapers to Temples

1–2 WEEKS/TOKYO TO KYOTO

This 550km route is the classic Japan route that takes in the best of modern and traditional Japan. The route involves only one major train journey: the three-hour shinkansen trip between Tokyo and Kyoto (the Kyoto-Nara trip takes less than an hour by express train). For those with limited time who want to get a good taste of Japan, this is the logical choice.

The Tokyo–Kyoto route is the classic Japan route and the best way to get a quick taste of Japan. For first-time visitors with only a week or so to look around, a few days in Tokyo sampling the modern Japanese experience and four or five days in the Kansai region exploring the historical sites of Kyoto and Narais the way to go. This allows you to take in some of Japan’s most famous attractions while not attempting to cover too much ground. The journey between Tokyo and Kyoto is best done by shinkansen (bullet train) to save valuable time.
