Itinerary: Laos for Kids
TWO WEEKS
Assemble the family for an all-out assault on everything kids will like about Laos. In Vientiane they'll be awed by the bizarre Hindu-Buddhist sculptures at Xieng Khuan (Buddha Park) - once they're in the 'pumpkin' monument you may have to drag them away.
Head north to Luang Prabang, waking the brood when you pass through the spooky finger peaks near Muang Phu Khoun, which resemble a scene out of Disney's Sorcerer's Apprentice. In Luang Prabang, swimming at Tat Sae and Tat Kuang Si waterfalls is a sure bet, as is the half-day boat trip to the Pak Ou caves .
From Luang Prabang, fly, drive or bus to Xieng Khuang Province and let them loose among the mysterious stone jars on the Plain of Jars Site 1. For a cultural interlude, hike to nearby villages. Other activities the team might enjoy here include a visit to the new hot springs near Ban Thak and the easy clamber up a cliff to see Tham Piu, a cave now famous as a Second Indochina War memorial.
