For an end-to-end trip encompassing Mexico’s most peerless playas, start off in Baja California by picking your own pristine beach south of Mulegé, then head to Loreto, Baja’s water-sports paradise, for more action.

Over on the mainland, make a beeline for the lagoon-backed beaches of San Blas and the popular surf village Sayulita before hitting Puerto Vallarta with its beach parties and marine wildlife. Slow down on the nearly empty beaches of the Costalegre before soaking in the rolling waves of Melaque.

Zip down to Barra de Nexpa where international surfers rule, and don’t miss the crashing waves of Troncones. Revive on the soothing bay at Zihuatanejo before taking on high-energy Acapulco.

On the Oaxaca coast, the ‘Mexican Pipeline’ challenges experienced surfers at lively Puerto Escondido, or you can simply stroll the sands and lie back in a hammock at backpackers’ haven Zipolite.

Move over to the Caribbean for party time at Cancún followed by a spot of snorkeling and relaxation at nearby Isla Mujeres. Tulum, with beachside Maya ruins and palm-fringed white sand, is a highly popular place to end a trip, but the pretty beaches around Xcalak, to the south, are less developed.
