Itinerary: Atlantic Adventure

TWO-THREE WEEKS / TANGIER TO DAKHLA
Morocco’s Atlantic seaboard takes you from the clamour of the north to the deserted coastline of the south.
Take the ferry from Spain to
Tangier, at once a quintessentially Moroccan mosaic and a decadent outpost of Europe that feels more like Marseilles than Morocco. Catch the train south, first to artsy
Asilah, which is loaded with whitewashed charm and then on to
Casablanca with its melange of Art Deco and skyscrapers.
Follow Casa’s suburbanites to
El-
Jadida then visit
Oualidia, a St Tropez lookalike grafted onto the African coast and arrayed around a perfect crescent lagoon. There’s also safe surfing spots nearby. Further down the coast,
Essaouira may have been discovered long ago, but its white-walled ramparts, bohemian beat and renovated riads have that special something that makes travellers stay longer than they planned. The peaceful beaches of
Diabat and
Sidi Kaouki are close at hand.
For family-friendly beaches head on to
Agadir or escape the crowds further south in
Mirleft or
Sidi Ifni, the last ports of call before the Western Sahara. If you’re heading south to Mauritania (and there are few other reasons to come down here), break your journey at
Laâyoune , the biggest city in the Sahara, and then
Dakhla.
