Keep the kids entertained with loads of natural and constructed delights, including a smattering of museums where adults take the back seat.
While you’re digesting Vienna’s sublime art collections, drop the kids off at Zoom, an arts and crafts bonanza for children up to 14, or Schönbrunn’s Kindermuseum, which transforms them into royalty for a day. Otherwise get some fresh air at the Prater, an enormous city park complete with funfair and playgrounds, the Tiergarten, the oldest zoo in the world, or the Donauinsel, an island perfect for swimming and mucking about. Nearby Neusiedler See, with its shallow waters and water sports, is another spot for kids to enjoy the water.
Graz’s FriDa & FreD is a children’s museum in the same mould as Vienna’s Zoom, while the city’s Schlossberg Cave Railway, with its fairytale scenes, is fun for kids of all ages.
Take them on a trip around the world’s most famous architectural sites at Minimundus miniature park in Klagenfurt or inspire future puppeteers at the puppet museums near Villach. While in Linz, let the electronic wizardry of the Ars Electronica entertain them, or trundle them up the Pöstlingberg for views of the city and a ride on its grotto railway. If you’re way out west, stop in at Dornbirn’s Inatura to explore nature up close and personal.
At Eisenerz in Styria, take ’em on a trip underground or for a ride on the world’s largest taxi at the Erzberg mine, or have them shooting down wooden miners’ slides and riding the subterranean railway of Hallstatt’s Salzbergwerk.
