LONELY PLANET'S OFFICIAL GUIDEBOOK INFORMATION
Getting Started
Austria is a traveller-friendly destination with a world-class transport system, well-maintained roads and information offices in almost every village. Its social infrastructure leaves no gaps: banks, hospitals, doctors, dentists, police, supermarkets – you name it, it’s all easy to find and readily available. Distances between places of interest aren’t massive, so you needn’t worry about your butt going numb before you arrive at your intended destination.
Although Austria requires a minimum of planning, a few nights mulling over what you’d like to see doesn’t do any harm; this will allow your travels to become all that more fluid once you hit the road.
DON`T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT...
Double-checking the visa situation and your passport expiry date.
Organising a good health-insurance policy.
A spattering of the language, or a phrase book – a little goes a long way.
A servitude of politeness; Austrians love their greetings, titles, pleases and thank yous.
A good relationship with dogs; in Vienna, owners take them everywhere, including bars and restaurants.
Good hiking boots and swimming trunks; this is the land of mountains and lakes.
Hair dye, socks and sandals so you’ll fit right in.
