Getting Started

Untitled Document

Norway is extremely well developed, but unless you’ve decided to blow the massive inheritance sitting in your bank account, prior knowledge and careful planning can make your hard-earned kroner go a lot further. Because of the vast distances involved, you’re unlikely to be able to visit all of Norway’s myriad sights, so doing some research before you go will help to make the most of this exceptional destination.

DON`T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT …

In general, you’ll need to pack no more for Norway than you would any other European holiday, but there are some particular things which you won’t regret having:

Nice shoes – many Norwegians often consider shoes to be the mark of a person.
Sturdy hiking boots – hiking in sandals is a recipe for disaster.
One alternative to jeans and trainers (sneakers) –  Norwegians dress casually, but you’ll need something more for a night out.
A jacket, jersey (sweater) or anorak (windbreaker) that can be added or removed, even in summer.
A sleeping sheet, a warm, but lightweight sleeping bag and/or your own sheets – most hostels and camping huts charge extra for bed linen.
A rail pass of some description – why pay full price when you don’t have to?.
Plenty of patience if you’re driving – getting anywhere in a hurry can be a frustrating business on Norwegian roads.
