A short flight from Panama City,
Isla Contadora has a dozen fine beaches – and the country’s only nude one.
The charming island of
Isla Taboga is closer in, with beaches, hiking trails and fine views. The windswept
Isla Grande is a favorite of weekending urbanites, while the hundreds of islands of the
Comarca de Kuna Yala are among Panama’s loveliest – with white sands, palm trees and many coral reefs. Just west of the capital, lie half a dozen beaches –
El Palmar,
Río Mar,
Playa Coronado,
Santa Clara and
Farallón. Drop into
Los Santos for fine, untouched beaches on Isla Iguana and the picturesque surfing beach of
Playa Venao.
Even better surf – and fantastic diving – is found in
Playa Santa Catalina. Local fishermen there can take you to all the hidden spots around
Isla de Coiba. Head to
Boca Brava for a pure island getaway. Around Bocas are dozens of favorites:
Boca del Drago,
Isla Carenero,
Isla Solarte and the gorgeous beaches of
Bastimentos.
