Itinerary: The Monster Tapeo
There is no tradition of the pub crawl in Spain, but there is the tapeo, the tapas crawl, from tasca to tasca down the street or around the neighbourhood. But let's go on one through the great tapeo heart of Spain.
Start in Madrid. Cava Baja is upscale, and has a few establishments offering cecina de caballo (yes, horsemeat ham). Next day board the AVE train bound for Seville, the premier tasca town of Spain. Calle del Betis has many tascas. Look for one with barrels for tables. In the wee hours find a cluster on Calle de los Alemanes across from the cathedral. Now head for Jerez de la Frontera. This is chichi Spain, so bring your gold card. The best tascas are on the side streets, away from fancy folk. While you're there take a tour of a sherry bodega. Now eat your way to Cadiz. It's a beautiful, tiny city, perfect for the tapeo because of its size. And it's likely to have more tascas per capita than any burg in Iberia. Now repeat, in reverse. ¡Salud!
