Itinerary: Thailand for Kids

BANGKOK TO HUA HIN

This circuit is designed to offer children plenty to see and do without any marathon travel distances. Bangkok, itself as hyperactive as any preteen, has enough attractions for nearly a week. If animals amuse then centrally located Dusit Zoo is a sure bet, as are the cobra-milking antics at Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute.

On the outskirts of Bangkok you'll find croc shows and elephant 'roundups' at Samphran Elephant Ground & Zoo and 69-hectare Safari World, said to be the largest open-air zoo in the world. Culture and history bundled into a walkable, climbable form is available at the scale replicas of Thailand's most famous ruins sites at Muang Boran in nearby Samut Prakan.

A train excursion to Kanchanaburi and across the famous 'Bridge Over the River Kwai' will excite all but the most jaded kids. Outside of town take the tykes along the scenic, safe trails following the seven-tiered waterfall at Erawan National Park or climb the hilltop ridge leading to the colourful temples of Wat Tham Seua and Wat Tham Khao Noi.

End the trip with a relaxing stay at the beachside resort of Hua Hin, whose advantages include relatively calm waters, plenty of restaurant variety and pony rides on the beach.
