Itinerary: Capital Highlights

ONE TO TWO WEEKS/LONDON TO STIRLING CASTLE

Without stopping much you could do this 900-mile journey in a week. But pause to drink in the culture and history, not to mention the occasional beer in a country pub, and two weeks becomes a much better option.

Start in London, the capital of Britain, brimming with spectacle, energy and choice. Go west to Winchester, ancient capital of King Alfred, before continuing via Stonehenge, Britain's famous prehistoric site, and Bath, renowned for architecture and Roman remains.

Cross Severn Bridge to Cardiff, the capital of Wales and a cultural hub. Then travel north to Caernarfon Castle, the seat of government for Edward I's subjugation of Wales.

Next, a cross-country epic takes you via Ironbridge Gorge, a celebration of the heritage of Britain's industrial growth, and Manchester, modern-day capital of northern England, to York, capital for the Vikings who controlled the same area a millennium ago.

Then head for Edinburgh, exuberant capital of the newly devolved Scotland, where the elegant architecture reflects long-held tradition and cosmopolitan modernity. Finish at the dramatic Stirling Castle, ancient royal seat and scene of Braveheart battles.
