LONELY PLANET'S OFFICIAL ITINERARY INFORMATION

Itinerary: Dude, That's Weird

Combine a fierce sense of independence with a vast landscape, and what you get is a bunch of crazies giving free rein to their obsessions. They call it 'Americana,' but after a while it gets a little scary. Proceed at your own risk.

You'd think DC would know better, but the National Museum of Health & Medicine is seriously weird. Florida's Coral Castle is one of America's many iterations of Stonehenge; here it's evidence of love gone horribly awry. Or join Floridians as they throw fish (competitively!) in the Interstate Mullet Toss in Perdido Key. In Iowa's cornfields you can practice yogic flying at Vedic City, while Houston has the Beer Can House and Art Car Museum. In California, admire the majestic junk-pile that is Nitt Witt Ridge, or learn the truth about Bigfoot at the Bigfoot Discovery Museum outside Santa Cruz.

Then there are the classics: South Dakota's Corn Palace, Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial; New Mexico's Very Large Array; Wisconsin's Dr Evermor's Sculpture Park; Colorado's UFO Watchtower; Minnesota's Mall of America; and the entire city of Las Vegas. Dude, now that's weird.
