LONELY PLANET'S OFFICIAL ITINERARY INFORMATION
Itinerary: We're here, we're Queer
It's never been more fun to be gay in the USA. Despite the current gay marriage brouhaha, gay travelers will find numerous places where they can be themselves without thinking twice. Sure, these places are mainly in the big cities, but cities are the most fun anyway!
Manhattan is too crowded, busy and cosmopolitan to bother worrying about such things, while Fire Island is, as it always has been, the hot, sandy gay mecca on Long Island. However, Philadelphia, Washington DC and Provincetown, Massachusetts, also have major scenes.
Going south, steamy 'Hotlanta' and sexy Savannah, Georgia, know how to work up a sweat. In Florida, Miami and the 'Conch Republic' of Key West have long supported thriving gay communities. Then, of course, in anything-goes New Orleans, anything goes.
Minnesota's Twin Cities support a gay community that is second only to the holy of holies, San Francisco, in its percentage of gay residents. Speaking of San Francisco, this birthplace of gay rights is a must-stop for any gay traveler, and Los Angeles has an equally robust scene (it's the home of Hollywood, darling).
Lastly, Hawaii is pretty gay-friendly overall, but particularly in Waikiki.
