Itinerary: Around Guayana
Untitled Document
FOUR TO SIX WEEKS
Visiting all the listed attractions will take four to six weeks, and can take a large slice of your budget. Many travelers cross Guayana on their way between Venezuela and Brazil and mainly visit sights en route (Gran Sabana and Roraima), plus the almost compulsory Angel Falls. Put aside two weeks for these three sights.
Guayana is famed for its natural beauty and is one of the most traveled regions in the country. Most of its attractions though, are well off the beaten track and inaccessible by road, and the usual way of visiting them is by tour.
Guayana’s major travelers’ base is the old colonial port of
Ciudad Bolívar, easily accessible from Caracas by daily flights or a comfortable nine-hour bus ride. Stay a few days in town to stroll about the charming streets and museums, before taking a tour to
Canaima and the famous
Angel Falls (Salto Ángel). Back in Ciudad Bolívar, your next adventures might be the vast, enchanting highlands of
Gran Sabana and the massive table mountain of
Roraima. Tours to both places can be bought in Ciudad Bolívar, or you can go by bus along a spectacular road to
Santa Elena de Uairén and buy both tours more cheaply from here.
Ciudad Bolívar is also a springboard for the
Río Caura, a lovely river 200km to the southwest, which again, is only accessible on a tour. Guayana’s other big attraction is the
Delta del Orinoco, and this trip can also be organized from Ciudad Bolívar, or you can go to
Tucupita and shop around for a tour.
Some travelers go by bus to
Puerto Ayacucho to explore the upper Orinoco and Amazon basins – another virgin corner of the country, another off-the-beaten-track adventure and another tour.
