Itinerary: Venezuela on Foot

Venezuela has walking for everybody, whether it’s a leisurely beach stroll or a trek to a snowcapped peak.

When you arrive in Caracas, you’ll find fantastic hiking territory with over 200km of well-signposted trails in the Parque Nacional El Ávila, just north of the city. More good hiking awaits you in Parque Nacional Henri Pittier, just two hours west of Caracas by bus, where there are two-day treks from Turmero to Chuao or shorter hikes. Further west along the coast, you can hike to the top of the unusual Cerro Santa Ana, in the middle of the arid Península de Paraguaná, north of Coro.
The widest choice of hiking opportunities is around Mérida, where you can easily spend a month tramping local mountain paths. A hike from Mérida to Los Nevados is one of the most popular trips, but if you need something more challenging, the trek to the tops of Píco Bolívar and Pico Humboldt, the country’s highest peaks, might be the way to go.
For an ultimate adventure, nothing can beat the trek to the top of Roraima in Guayana, but you need at least five days to complete the trip, plus a couple more days to get to this distant corner of the country.
