LONELY PLANET'S OFFICIAL ITINERARY INFORMATION

Itinerary: Ain't No Mountain High Enough

ONE TO THREE WEEKS

Northwest Vietnam is a land of looming mountains, a mosaic of ethnic minorities, a region of overwhelming beauty - very much a world unto itself. Hit the road by 4WD or motorbike for an adventure more than a holiday - an experience that will stay with you forever.

Leaving the capital, head west to the villages of Mai Chau, which are home to the White Thai people and a perfect introduction to the life of the minorities. Northwest of here, where the road begins to climb into the Hoang Lien Mountains, a logical stop is Son La.

Dien Bien Phu is a name that resonates with history; it was here that the French colonial story ended with their overwhelming defeat at the hands of the Viet Minh in one of the most celebrated military victories. In the remote northeast is Lai Chau, at the heart of a patchwork of Thai communities and a staging post to Sapa. The road weaves through Tam Duong before climbing over the mighty Tram Ton Pass .

Sapa is the most popular destination in the northwest, thanks to the infinite views (on a clear day!), the amazing array of minority peoples and some of the region's most colourful markets. Bail out here by train from Lao Cai, or continue east to Bac Ha, home to the Flower H'mong. And for the ultimate end to the adventure, head into Ha Giang, a realm of mythical landscapes and unchartered territory.

The snaking roads on this journey are some of the most treacherous in Vietnam, and landslips and floods are common. The motor-biking here is pure heaven for seasoned two-wheelers, but for the majority a 4WD is the sanest way to go.
