Destination: Bolivia

LONELY PLANET'S OFFICIAL ITINERARY INFORMATION

Itinerary: Planes, Trains & Camiones

In Bolivia getting there is often half the fun. The means of transport can either be a pain or the highlight of your adventure.

From the world's highest funicular to the sluggish Death Train, you're spoiled for choice when it comes to mobility options.

Foolhardy adventurers shouldn't pass up the chance to conquer the World's Most Dangerous Road. Flying in a small plane along the Cordillera Real or into remote Noel Kempff Mercado National Park merits a million rolls of aerial photography. Piling yourself, your pack and your driver on a moto-taxi in Trinidad is almost as much fun as renting one and zipping around independently.

Romantic reed boat journeys or hydrofoil cruises on Lake Titicaca provide a refreshing change of pace. Several days of 4WD off-road rambling across the Salar de Uyuni will more than rack your back.

At the end of the day, there's always your feet: Bolivia has more than its share of awe-inspiring trekking, from Inca trails to the Yunga Cruz Trek. As for travelling on the buses and camiones - there are no words.
