LONELY PLANET'S OFFICIAL GUIDEBOOK INFORMATION

Getting Started

Untitled Document Travelling independently in Africa is always a challenge, but it’s an experience that often makes up a large part of the adventure. First things first, you’ll need to consider the variables of the weather – heavy rains and long, dry summers have a big impact on driving conditions and, more importantly, on what animals you’ll see and where.

Independent ‘self-drive’ tours are possible in both Botswana and Namibia, although these are cheaper and more popular in Namibia where any good travel agency can advise on itineraries and sleeping options. Throughout this book we have provided GPS co-ordinates to help with navigating remote and inaccessible areas.
