Itinerary: Road Raves
Canada has some of the world's most spectacular drives. In Newfoundland, the Viking Trail is an epic coastal road taking you past fjord-laced Gros Morne National Park and the L'Anse aux Meadows Viking settlement.

Another ocean drive is along Nova Scotia's Cabot Trail, which loops around Cape Breton Highlands National Park, revealing vistas of surreal beauty while whales patrol offshore. To get off the beaten track, head to eastern Quebec where Rte 132 loops around the rugged coast of the Gaspe Peninsula, punctuated by cliffs, waterfalls and villages. In Ontario, the Lake Superior Shore swoops and dips from Sault Ste Marie to Thunder Bay past rocky shores and forests. Canada's northernmost road, the gravelly Dempster Hwy, leads quite literally to the 'edge of the world.' Mountains, valleys, rivers and tundra of primordial beauty accompany you as you cross the Arctic Circle en route from Dawson City, Yukon to Inuvik in the Northwest Territories. Also in the Yukon is the breathtaking Top of the World Hwy, which winds from Dawson City to the Alaskan border. In Alberta, the Icefields Parkway is the country's most famous mountain road. It carves through the Rockies from Jasper to Lake Louise, past achingly beautiful lakes, icefields and waterfalls.
