Itinerary: Island-Hopping
Untitled Document
From the teeming port of
Rijeka, head to the nearby island of
Krk, famous for the walled town of Krk and fine white wines.
Take a swim at sandy Baška beach and then catch the ferry over to the savagely beautiful
Cres. Check out the griffon vultures in
Beli before moving south to the picturesque fishing port of
Mali Lošinj. Enjoy rocky Cikat bay but try to squeeze in a trip to nearby
Susak, famous for maintaining its traditional village ways. Next, hop a boat to the island of
Rab, a European holiday spot for over a century. If you’re not beached-out, take a dip around
Lopar before heading over to pretty Rab town and its four bell towers. Take a boat to Novalja on
Pag. Its dry, flat landscape has a stark beauty that contrasts sharply with green Rab. From Pag town, where lady lacemakers still exercise their skills on the straight, narrow streets, it’s a short drive to Zadar and a boat to
Dugi Otok, well away from noise and crowds. Go back to Zadar and catch a coastal ferry to
Stari Grad on
Hvar, perhaps the most beautiful island in the Adriatic, replete with pine, lavender fields and idyllic offshore islets. Move on to lushly wooded
Korcula, and from there cross the waters to
Mljet National Park on a magical isle that is said to have bewitched Odysseus.
