TWO WEEKS TO TWO MONTH
After ogling the incredible architecture of
Habana, head to
Santa Clara and the venerable
Monumento Ernesto Che Guevara, with its superb mausoleum. Press southwest to charming
Cienfuegos next, with its large, placid bay and its noble neoclassical buildings, before working your way slowly down the coast to
Trinidad. A Unesco World Heritage site, you can easily spend a week in this colonial town hiking in
Topes de Collantes and horseback riding in
Valle de los Ingenios or lazing at
Playa Ancón. Smiling is infectious in the labyrinthine streets of
Camagüey, where a bustling new bar scene will mean you get lost without even realizing it.
Guardalavaca is one of the finest resort areas with terrific diving, paragliding and a smattering of local native history. Welcome to
Holguín Province, with its friendly capital and Fidel’s childhood home in
Birán. Leave time for
Santiago de Cuba and its many attractions including
El Cobre,
La Gran Piedra, the
Castillo de San Pedro del Morro, the
Cuartel Moncada and of course, the kicking nighttime music scene.
Most international flights take you into Habana or Santiago de Cuba, but you can easily start this adventure in
Varadero or
Holguín, other popular entry points.
