LONELY PLANET'S OFFICIAL ITINERARY INFORMATION

Itinerary: Ancient Wonders

Untitled Document THREE WEEKS

The ancient sites are one of the main reasons to visit Greece, and this itinerary takes in all the biggest names, as well as a couple of lesser lights.

After a few days exploring Athens, catch a train west to Corinth for a visit to Ancient Corinth and Acrocorinth. Continue by train to Ancient Olympia and the Sanctuary of Olympia, birthplace of the Olympic Games. From here you can either head southeast to Andritsena, for a detour to the Temple of Vasses, or make your way east to Nafplio, travelling across the Peloponnese through the mountains of Central Arcadia.

Nafplio is a perfect base for side trips to Mycenae and Epidavros , before moving south to Sparta and Mystras. Gythio, Sparta’s port in ancient times, is the place to catch a boat south to Kissamos in Crete. Consider stopping at either Hania or Rethymno on the journey to Iraklio and the Minoan palace of Knossos. Heading north it’s hard to sail past Santorini on the way to Mykonos, the base for trips to sacred Delos.
