LONELY PLANET'S OFFICIAL GUIDEBOOK INFORMATION

Getting Started

Untitled Document Greece is an easy and adventurous place to travel. The public transport system is well developed and there is a range of accommodation to suit every budget. Greece doesn’t really require a lot of planning as half the fun can be just turning up and taking pot luck – especially with over 70 inhabited islands to choose from and a wide range of mainland attractions. Then again, if you are on time rations, a bit of forward planning may make the difference between success and disappointment. Greece is a safe, stable country and, while it is not as cheap as it used to be, you can make your euro stretch a little further with some care and forethought.

DON`T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT...

Most travellers carry far too much gear, filling bags and backpacks with things that will never see the light of day. It’s best to bring only the essentials; you can buy anything else you might need in Greece. The essentials are:

A sturdy pair of shoes for clambering around ancient sites and wandering through historic towns and villages, which tend to have lots of steps and cobbled streets.
Good sunglasses – essential in summer.
Your mobile phone. You can buy a local SIM card cheaply and keep in touch with family and friends.
A few paperback novels to while away the hours spent riding ferries.
A few photos of your family, your home and your region: they are great for answering the questions of curious locals.
A digital camera: Greece is enviably over-photogenic. Send photos home via the Internet and make friends jealous.
