LONELY PLANET'S OFFICIAL ITINERARY INFORMATION

Itinerary: Northern Hill Stations & the Himalaya

If you're in India during the warmer months, when the heat on the plains can become downright stifling, this itinerary - beginning and ending in Delhi - is particularly recommended. Note that Leh is only accessible by land from May to October.

Spend four days in action-packed Delhi before climbing a cool 2205m to Shimla, laden with panoramic views, crumbling colonial charm and pleasurable short hikes. From Shimla, nip northwest to traveller-buzzing McLeod Ganj, home of the exiled Dalai Lama. In McLeod Ganj, take a scenic walk, do a Buddhist philosophy course, and give back to the community by offering your services as a volunteer.

Those seeking a hill station with less hype should consider Dalhousie, from where you can visit the Kalatope Wildlife Sanctuary, home to black bears and barking deer, and Chamba, with its ancient temples and easy access to some lovely trekking locations. Next, stop at Manali, a popular base for pursuing invigorating outdoor activities, from rock climbing to river rafting. The final halt, before returning to Delhi, is at the Himalayan town of Leh, Ladakh's capital and jumping-off point for excursions to surrounding attractions and various blood-pumping treks.
