All over bridges and staircases in Khmer art you see these guys- Asura (demons)- holding a giant multi-headed serpent called the Naga. This is from a famous legend called "The Churning of the Sea of Milk", in which gods and devils hold opposite ends of a gargantuan serpent and basically play tug of war to churn up the ocean to extract the elixir of immortality... pretty cool
