Writing in my journal with only lamp-light and the
pitter-patter of rain on the tin roof was a perfect Saturday night. When Sunday
morning arrived the rain was still falling and I decided to sleep in late (6:30

This morning Alan and I tagged along when Phil went to

Another near miss. Today we converted a rocky piece of
land into a large compost pile. With buckets, a wheel barrow and a frontend
loader we moved rocks of all sizes out of the plot and added soil with fewer
rocks (No escaping rocks in the ... Read more >

Most of my time working here at Finca Quijote is spent
alone. With the main focus of reducing leaf-cutter ant problems, I have spent my
time botanizing (collecting and learning the new array of plants and reading
about their chemical properties);... Read more >

Every other Friday, Phil takes his workers to the city of
Turrialba for shopping and to enjoy themselves in the city. Exactly the sort of
experience I was looking for, especially when the words street-food and cerveza
came up. Around ... Read more >

The guest house in Esperanza where I am staying is no
5-star hotel. A work in progress, open spaces let in plenty of insects that are
attracted to the lights at night. But you have to make do with what you have.
There is currently no sink, and so ... Read more >

What was so frightening at night
is nothing short of extraordinary during the day. Steep slopes of large
mountains with dense secondary forest; in the distance clouds hang below in

The expectation is that when you plan something months in
advance, it will all play out according to your grand scheme. But rarely is
that true. On Thursday morning at 4 am (okay, more like 4:12 by the time Mr.
Sleepyhead got out of bed), I ... Read more >
