T2C--Model of Pacaya

Tue, 19 May 2009 | By tom_moench | Views [1307]

OK, I am a sucker for maps and little models in museums and elsewhere. Here is a model of Pacaya and some of its volcanic neighbors in a glass case in the village of San Francisco that serves as the dropoff point and trailhead for the hike to the volcano.... Read more >

Tue, 19 May 2009 | By enrique_nunez_mussa | Views [1280]

Since ever, I have gone away to the bed so early and waked up at six o'clock in the morning as this days. I eat breakfast and go to do classes. I’ve been asked to prepare a special class on Chile in Social Sciences. I sit the children in a circle.... Read more >

Frieda's Art

Mon, 18 May 2009 | By tom_moench | Views [692] | Video

OK, this little video clip has nothing whatsoever to do with Antigua or Guatemala, but it is any interesting video montage of self-portraits by Frieda Kahlo's. Frieda did many self-portraits because she was often bed-ridden due to childhood polio and ... Read more >

Frieda's Restaurant

Mon, 18 May 2009 | By tom_moench | Views [1266]

We decided to have lunch at Frieda's Restaurant. To practice Spanish during my time in Xela I re-watched the Selma Hyak/Julie Taymor movie, Frieda, about Mexican-born artist Frieda Kahlo so I was curious. (By the way, I recommend this movie and the special ... Read more >

Walking Antigua

Mon, 18 May 2009 | By tom_moench | Views [445]

We set off in the morning to walk about this lovely and most walkable of cities. The sun was warm and the people bustling about. All roads seem to lead to Parque Central and its colonial architecture, this example along the east side of the square.

Posada with a View

Mon, 18 May 2009 | By tom_moench | Views [231]

Another nice aspect of our posada is the rooftop terrace. From here I can scan over Antigua to see the rooftops and the ruins of the many churches that collapsed in the 1773 earthquake. This morning I was journaling when a photographer suggested I go ... Read more >

La Fonda de La Calle

Sun, 17 May 2009 | By tom_moench | Views [368]

Our hotel recommended this restaurant just off the city square. We went around 2 PM. A group of xylophonists were playing in the entrance. The walls of the restaurant were covered in fun Spanish quotes. We ordered a lovely Guatemaltecan meal along with ... Read more >

Theora and I arrived in Antigua. After being a 24/7 student for 8 weeks my objective in Antigua was to relax and begin to make the transition from full Spanish immersion back to full immersion back to English. Theora wanted to see the lava flow at ... Read more >

Chicken Bus Theory

Sun, 17 May 2009 | By tom_moench | Views [451]

I never saw any chickens on the "chicken buses" and neither did any of my fellow students.[Typical chicken bus pulling out at Antigua bus terminal as we arrived]. Therefore, I have another idea behind the origin of the name. As I have mentioned ... Read more >

Adios to Xela

Sun, 17 May 2009 | By tom_moench | Views [296]

It was time to bid Xela "adios" and begin my transition back to the states with my daughter. We decided to make Antigua our final port of call. Trinis and Daniel were so very kind to save us the hot, hour long walk across town to the Minerva ... Read more >
