![Whitewashing the Bouddhanath stupa is an ancient ritual aiming for conservation while at the same time is a symbol of renovation and continuity. Twice each month the painters repaint the stupa by pouring the white color on all over the dome then adding yellow color arcs round the stupa in the shape of a double lotus flower.
