    The kids of Pho Kham seem to have a very happy upbringing full of love and fun and devoid of the kinds of things western kids complain about. There is no such thing as boredom- they spend a few hours each morning at school, getting out around 11.30 and after lunch spend their time swimming, riding their bikes, exploring, fishing, and being fascinated by visitors. The kids do help on the farms and around the house when asked but have a lot of freedom. When I asked Nola about toys, she proudly produced her favourite teddy bear.          		 After hiking through the jungle for three hours to show me their favourite, secret waterfall, Capitan and Luat prepared the most divine soup- from plants they collected along the way.          		 Food in Pho Kham was simple fare. Endless sticky rice, fresh greens, mushrooms from the jungle and when someone has a hankering for fresh meat, the kids are sent down to the river to hunt frogs. A few weeks before I arrived, a water buffalo drowned herself in a water-way and the whole village turned out to pull her out, butcher her and the meat was shared amongst all the families. : by laurenbogle, Views[406]
         		 Every household in the village provided a special service. One family ran a rice-whiskey distillery, another owned a machine for de-husking rice. Luat's family grows tobacco and he spends his free time rolling endless cigarettes and doting on his grandaughter: by laurenbogle, Views[378]

    These two very small piglets were so inquisitive yet so scared! Barely a few weeks old, they would run towards us and then hide in the bushes. These piglets were at the start of the village, which meant the end of our trek and then end of our three day unbelievable zipline experience.          		 We came across this farmer and his wife on our way back to the village on our final day. They both hike several hours every day to sell drinks to the ten or so travellers who cross this path. While she was selling the drinks, we watched him gather wood, use his knife to take the bark off and make it smooth, then begin to place it together to fix his gate which had been broken.          		 This beautiful little girl so badly wanted to get her photo taken. She was torn between looking after her little brother who was crying and wanting to pose for the camera. In so many remote villages like this one we came across hiking between ziplines, children are responsible for their younger siblings at such a young age.          		 The treehouse we called home on our second night. 300m above ground, only accessible via zipline and so high it sways in the wind! For one night it was home to six weary travellers and possibly over one hundred gigantic spiders.          		 One of the most exhilarating experiences you can have. The Gibbon Experence in Laos. After a 5 minute demonstration, you find yourself ziplining 500m between valleys and hundreds of metres above ground - with the most basic of breaking systems.. an old bike tire placed on the line which you apply pressure to slow yourself down - pure adrenaline!     These two little munchkins wandered into the garden the other day to see me unannounced... when I brought them back to their classroom, I was surprised to see that their teacher wasn't there and the rest of the pre-schoolers were running amok in the classroom. I'm getting used to seeing teachers just not show up to their classes (or leave the kids unsupervised for various lengths of time throughout the day), but I was most surprised and touched by the fact that these kids had 'No Teacher Freedom' and chose to come all the way to the garden...!: by shrummer16, Views[289]
