         		 As night falls, the lights in every unit begin to light up. Each light represent a home with family and friends. From afar, these lights are like the guiding light of the lighthouse that brings each person back to their comfort zones called home. I grew up in a neighbourhood where everyone went on with their lives, oblivious to everyone else's. But here, it almost feels as if we live in a community of close proximity.: by redefined, Views[208]
         		 Take-away coconuts for a hot day which we can never escape despite the frequent heavy downpour; coconuts are wrapped in plastic bags for convenient carrying purposes as we quench our thirst with the refreshing coconut water. Almost everything in my home country can be taken-away (or in local colloquial terms, tapao). The fruit-seller would zealously chop the coconut open with a well-sharpened blade, creating an almost-pentagon shape and insert a straw.          		 My dearest grandmother would often welcome us with a smile when she remembers us; or when we bring along one of her favourite snacks: red bean paste steamed buns.     Even as the monsoon season has arrived, birds still play around in times like these – when the sunlight hits the waters just right – and they occasionally celebrate in dances as such. The two birds flew around in circles with each other right above the surface of the cool waters.          		 In the morning, the keeper of this place would rise early to attend to the chores around the premise. He tends to the gardens – all the trees, every plants – and he cleans the drains, etc. Morning to morning, he would clean the pool and sprinkle white chlorine powder into the pool. It reminded me of magical fairy dusts. It also made me wonder if anyone else notices him at all as he attend to all the chores in a place we call home. I did not grow up here and I only came to live here when I returned from my study abroad. This may be a condominium but the premise is still considered our home too.          		 As dusk falls, a lone smouldering drum is the only remaining sign of the day’s earlier frenetic activity outside the Yap clan temple. Late-arriving devotees drift like ghostly spectres as they light their candles, say their prayers and enter the golden glow of the hall under the protective watch of stone dragons and lazy whirls of smoke.          		 Birthday celebrations continue throughout the day with a feverish schedule of music, concerts and offerings. A Yap clan performer assumes a more casual pose away from the heat and commotion at the temple.          		 A costumed clan performer briefly breaks the illusion of her confronting attire by flashing a cheeky smile across the smoke drafts, before resuming her role in the procession. It’s a rough recital, peppered with awkward pauses and self-conscious glances. But the show isn’t for the living.     Beneath the omnipotent gaze of a statue devoted to the clan god, costumed performers wearing imposing Chinese opera face paint and stunning sequined outfits begin a choreographed procession in the temple’s entryway. As the band strikes up a cacophonous clanging of drums, flutes and cymbals, the actors begin wildly circling the offering table.          		 Hundreds of Yap clan members have flocked to the smoke-shrouded Yap Kongsi Temple in Georgetown, Penang, to throw a birthday party. The birthday boy is not one of the dozens of people obstructing traffic, praying or burning wads of paper money, but Hoay Che Chun Wang, the patron deity of the clan. He turns 800 today.          		 Rainy night at Mr. Soon's rented family home and workplace. His family generations have been staying here for the past 120 years. Life here however is coming to an end for Mr. Soon and his family by December 2014. With the once famous British colonial trading settlement - George Town rapidly turning into tourist town after the conferment of UNESCO title in 2008, he is not spared from merciless home eviction due to capitalism. Even being listed in the intangible heritage trade inventory, Mr. Soon today is facing the threat of not having a place to run his old trade, as the rental price tag has skyrocketed to an unrealistic figure, that poses so much threat to his already endangered trade - the bamboo and rattan weaver trade. He is contemplating to stop his old trade, not because of the lack of business volume, but basically involuntary movement (without any protection and relocation effort from UNESCO official monitoring agency) and high rental for alternative place. The gentrification of tourism has caused ripple effect of lacking of workplace for traditional trade and residence for the living heritage. Food for thought.          		 Thean Seng Huat, is Mr. Soon's trade name. From right to left, it literally means,
         		 This is Mr. Soon's narrow workspace. Sharp work and a very discipline man, Mr. Soon carefully takes on the trade 6 days a week and live upstairs. He is slicing down the bamboo at equal width, to then weave to become a round bamboo divider that is going to be placed in the Dim Sum steamer - this is for his client, Cantonese Dim Sum restaurant. Back of him, is the iron grill door, torn down from his house when his house caught on fire last year, that forced the firemen to cut his grill door to do fire rescue. Thank God he was safe.          		 Mr. Soon, 67 years old, a traditional craftman in George Town, Penang, worked his entire life as a weaver of bamboo and rattan trades. Comes with skillful hands and trained by parents since young, for more than 50 years, he carried this trade as his life and soul till to date. Seen in the picture, is a seemingly blunt triangular knife that cuts nothing but the bamboo, it was passed down by his late parents and it is more than a century old.: by theforgottenbambooandrattantrade, Views[1200]
