Next we move across the room to a computer terminal with a database of virtually every convict who was sent to Australia. It is a very impressive project which really encourages Aussies to embrace their roots and recognize both their heritage and the fact that most of their ancestors were deported for petty crimes and were essentially just considered "surplus population." Until this past decade there was a lot of national shame and suppression of the convict origins. Anyway there were a couple Craggs listed. Daniel Cragg from Nottingham received 7 years in 1839 for the crime of Stealing Stockings. He was 23, literate and worked as a "sweep."
