         		 'Gold in them hills'. Chapter 2. An intense thunderstorm woke me up in the middle of the night. But I was supposed to leave by night, and I left. You cannot wake up at 9 if you want to see the sunrise at Machu Picchu. It seemed as if the rain were improvising a symphony.          		 'Andean eyes passing by'. Chapter 1. I arrived to Cusco on New Year's Eve. This big day unfolds in front of my eyes. I know there's a big celebration coming at night. But I have the whole day to explore yet! Under the jagged silhouette of this cloud-high city - capital of the Inca Empire - there's a rythmic up and down of vehicles, merchants, and tiny dogs that goes on all day. On the early morning, the only girl on this crowded bus is dressed all in red.          		 A couple enjoy the day at the Plaza de Armas with their daughter during Cusco Carnival or Cusco Week, when there are daily processions in the Plaza de Armas, the central plaza in historic Cusco. : by shirak, Views[536]
         		 A group of men struggle under the weight of a saints' effigy as they carry it through the streets of Cusco and around the Plaza de Armas, during the festival of Corpus Christi. They will do this all day and into the night when they will store the effegies until morning in La Catedral, a Spanish colonial cathedral, which you can see behind them. Celebrated exactly nine weeks after Easter, it is a ritual co-opted by the Spanish in the 16th Century to Catholicize the Incan people.     Early one morning at the crack of dawn, after attempting to photograph a Cusco sunrise, I spotted this man walking up the Calle Triunfo, a famous Incan stone-walled alley.          		 Mountain peak Pachamama, Isla Amantani, Lake Titicaca It was a difficult climb over 13,000 ft to reach the top because of the thin air.          		 Isla Taquile, Lake Titicaca I was surprise by the calm water of Lake Titicaca, and of the colours that were reflecting on its surface, it was similar to Adriatic sea, but the clouds were so near the water.          		 The lonely tree of Machu Picchu It was 21.12.2012. In the morning it was a beautiful shiny day, and full of tourist.     Lagunas, Reserva National Salinas y Aguada Blanca, Arequipa This photo was taken above 13,000 ft and I was very weak because of the altitude. we get off the bus to watch the landscape, but I was very weak to stand, so I get down on the ground and then I saw this beautiful scene and I take this photo.          		 Meet Francesca. We delivered food and collected firewood for her. She lives in a one-room house, the kitchen is outside and her roof leaks when it rains. When we returned with firewood she was proudly sweeping the dirt floor of her kitchen. She seemed so wonderfully happy and delighted that we had come; I was taken aback by her joviality. When we pulled out a bag of candy and offered it to her, her face lit up like a child’s. She was so shocked by our sudden offering of sweets she staggered over to her chicken’s nest and offered us two eggs insisting we take them in return for the candy. I held back my tears with everything I had and declined her offer.          		 I took this photo as we were leaving her house. I noticed a smile had crept onto her face once she realized all of her belongings were safe and drying (in the correct location) beside her house. I felt a sense of relief. I walked back after taking this photograph and showed her the image on the screen, she swatted playfully at my face with a big grin. Ironically, I saw more of myself by watching her look at the photograph in awe than I would ever see by looking at my reflection in a mirror.: by peruvianperspectives, Views[360]
         		 This woman is the definition of determination and resilience. She lives alone in a mud house with little to no food. Her children no longer take care of her, they have all moved to the city to find jobs and provide for their children. She is disabled and has very minimal use of her left hand. We visited her and brought her some food and offered to help wash herself and her clothing and bed linen. Initially she refused our help, out of sheer pride and weariness of five very pale strangers suddenly entering her home. After reassuring her through our translator’s broken Quechua that we were not going to steal her clothes, we washed them in the river and laid them on the grass to dry beside her house. I took this photo as she was coming around the corner to check up on us and ensure that we were placing her wet belongings in the correct spot for optimal sunlight - even though there was a language barrier all of us still respected the fact that she knew best. : by peruvianperspectives, Views[489]
