         		 Ah, the railing. The water LOOKS calm on the surface, but it was next to impossible to keep your feet from being swept out from under you. Just another reason why you NEED a guide...we had all been convinced that a railing was a ridiculous paranoia....how wrong we were.          		 There are tons of these Lisu vendors set up all along the banks of the lake in town. Yes, I did buy a lot of stuff from them...so colourful and so cheap...and they really pull the guilt trip on you ~ 'you buy so I can eat..?????' Sheesh.: by lolo, Views[538]

    My first night in Mae Hong Son, I got stuck at a little restaurant along the (ONE) main strip while it poured rain. So many people were driving by on motorbikes, carrying umbrellas...crazy.: by lolo, Views[487]

         		 As protection against leeches while trekking, our porters soaked tobacco with river water, and then soaked our shoes and socks with the resulting brew. Its meant to kill them once they touch it, but one made it to my ankle...the resulting bite is sure to leave a scar...!: by lolo, Views[1257]

         		 Apparently the rings don't actually EXTEND the neck..but rather, they push the shoulder muscles down, and rest upon the ribs. It distorts the musculature of the body, rather than the skeleton, thus creating the illusion of a longer neck.: by lolo, Views[363]

         		 More Padeung people. They are refugees from Myanmar (Burma) and the 250baht entrance fee to the village, while it feels rather exploitative, goes a long way to support the families living in the village.: by lolo, Views[478]

Taken on the first night of my trek, from a Karen hill tribe village, about 6.5 hours hike into the jungle.          		 A Padeung woman (also known as the long-neck Karen tribe) peddling her wares in the village. The village was about 20 min. by motorbike, northwest of Mae Hong Son....meaning, precariously close to the Burmese border.: by lolo, Views[5527]
         		 We started the trek with 2 porters and a guide...but one of the porters dropped out once we had eaten half the food, drank half the whiskey, etc. (half as much to carry, now!) This guy stayed the long haul with us, and was amazing.: by lolo, Views[608]
     
    Both of the porters, at the first rest break. Here they handed us packets of rice wrapped in banana leaf, and mandarin oranges, and then proceeded to catch 3-4 crabs (or what LOOKED like crabs..)from the river, to cook for themselves!: by lolo, Views[528]
