         		 An example of the modern Japanese tendency for syncretism is the river trail leading to the lake of Tazawako in Akita prefecture. This rather impressive tree is adorned with Shinto housing for the spirit that lives there, while also sporting Buddhist iconography and a nearby shrine and temple complex.          		 This is an unusually large collection of 'Jizō Bosatsu' or small stone depictions of lost children erected by grieving parents in the town. Found near the town of Amanohashidatte, in Kyoto prefecture.          		 This small Shinto shrine, nestled within a forest grove of Japanese cedar near Tazawako in the Akita prefecture is a prime example of the spiritual link modern Japanese people have between their daily lives and surrounding nature.          		 These are the ancient burial caves of the Zuiganji Temple in Matsushima. Founded in 828 AD, this Buddhist temple was originally founded in 828 as part of the Tendai sect, and was converted into a Zen temple during the Kamakura Period (1192-1333).
