         		 We visited a program in Siem Reap that helps impoverished village children get an education – which includes learning traditional Khmer dances. Each Sunday night the children offer performances that yield donations that help fund the program. Here, two girls perform Apsara dancing – the same dances depicted on the reliefs at Angkor Wat. Knowledge of these dances was destroyed by the Khmer Rouge, and it took the assistance of Thai dancers to bring them back to Cambodia.: by ivan_miral, Views[634]

         		 We drove 15 minutes outside of Phnom Penh to The Killing Fields of Choeung Ek – the death and grave site for most S21 victims.          		 The rooms of S21 are now lined with mug shots of the prisoners, nearly all of whom were killed before they saw freedom again.          		 Tuol Svay Prey High School was turned by the Khmer Rouge into what is now known as S21 – the most notorious of torture prisons. When Vietnam invaded Cambodia in 1979, I (Mi), was a toddler, safe on the other side of the world. I had no idea that what was being discovered were freshly killed victims, along with records of the most heinous acts human beings can do to another. 30 years later, I stop here to see, among the ropes and pliers and knives and chains, the prison's waterboarding mechanism.     Before the Khmer Rouge and before the decades of civil wars, Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital city, was known as the “Paris of the East.” Today, the capital bursts again with life as the Khmer work to rebuild their lives. This is a typical street scene in the city.: by ivan_miral, Views[1685]
         		 ...and an amazing array of Buddha statues – here, at one of the ceremonial pavilions. We weren't allowed to photograph them, but the ultimate in gorgeous Buddha statues were housed in the Silver Pagoda – including an Emerald Buddha made of Baccarat crystal and a life-sized golden Buddha decorated with 9584 diamonds!          		 A diversion we couldn't have expected – an 8:30am visit to a Phnom Penh bar to watch, on big screen TV, Ive's alma mater Crimson Tide take the BCS National Championship – complete with Bloody Marys, the first Crystal hot sauce we have seen since leaving the States, and some traditional “Roll Tide Roll” paraphernalia (Ive had to bring that part!).          		 In Phnom Penh we had this drinking-place close to our hotel. Everybody there so happy when we passed by (which happened at least 5 times a day), waving and asking questions.
