    Since the main route to Bogotá bypassed Salento many years ago, the small town with a population of approximately 4135 inhabitants has retained its traditional colonial architecture along with a quiet and relaxed way of life.          		 The road to Salento is not for the faint hearted. There are not rules here, but rather an “understanding” between the hundreds of truckers who haul their heavy loads from peak to peak on this twisty mountain road. Larger vehicles must sustain momentum on the steep inclines and will often overtake into the oncoming traffic. With some stretches reaching an altitude above 3000 meters visibility is also a major issue.          		 With the first rays of the sun, I get out my tent after a miserable sleepless night. Breathing is very difficult, but the cold crawling into my bones makes me forget about it.          		 As the ascent proceeded, vegetation started fading. Distant clouds approached and the wind came with ferocity. With the clouds absorbing us, the monumental landscape becomes a vast void, more indifferent to life as the altitude rises. Even Frailejones and moss, in their silent struggle against the hostility of the mountain, speak of a duration way longer than a human life: these majestic plants in the distance grow only one centimeter a year, they have been standing long before this land was called Colombia.: by cocuy, Views[421]
     
     
    At 4500 meters above the sea level life forms have faded and the cold becomes threatening. As we ascended into the cloud, the purest water keeps flowing from a height that will not reveal itself. Not so many years ago, this whole area was a red zone: the guerrilla crossed the iced peaks and settled in the region, some even in the same farm in which we stayed. Just to imagine the stamina of those men, carrying their equipment across this path of stone seems frightening. Our endurance is tested, as well as the battery of my medium format camera.
