    The arson-scarred ruins of Naria Primary School- a relic and reminder of Fiji's racial tensions. The school was burned down in 1987 and again in 2000, each time on the night following a government coup. Fiji was a British colony for almost 100 years, and the indentured Indian laborers that the British brought to work in the sugarcane fields still have descendants in Fiji. However, tensions between the Native and Indo-Fijians are thinly veiled, as Naria Priimary School stands as a testament to.          		 A Norwegian tourist and a village elder join forces against the wind to light suki- raw tobacco rolled in newsprint. The tourist was staying at the backpacker's lodge in the village that a resident Peace Corps volunteer helped establish.          		 A long exposure of the ferris wheel at Labasa's Festival of the Friendly North. This yearly festival draws tens of thousands from all over the island of Vanua Levu, and the ensuing crowd is a racous blend of villagers and city-dwellers amongst the rides and food stalls. At the time the photo was taken Fiji was a military dictatorship and large, non-religious gatherings were outlawed, so state-sponsored events like this one gave locals the rare opportunity to congregate en masse.          		 A portrait of my silent seatmate during 3-hour bus ride across the island of Vanua Levu from Labasa to Savusavu. The buses are ancient and break down often; frequent riders develop a deep-seated frustration with the bumpy 85 kilometer road that crosses the mountains that jut from the middle of the island.          		 Mary holds out the frog she caught whilst spending the afternoon by the river with friends. She did her best to torment amphibian phobia suffering friends by putting the frog in their clothes and throwing it at them, much to her delight. Navala is home to around 800 people and the community is close knit.          		 Teresa burns off rubbish whilst washing her family's clothing down on the river. Division of labour is obvious in Navala. For the most part, men work on the local farm and ranch whilst women work in the home. Regardless, women's contributions should not be ignored. Womens groups are common throughout many Fijian villages. Navala's womens group gathers often to arrange fundraising and to discuss local events.     Fiji's favourite sport is rugby, and Navala is no exception. Locals said that
         		 Navala is the last place in Fiji where it is mandatory to build traditional bures, or Fijian houses. With the exception of the school buildings and the village's church, every house is built the same way. Houses are only renovated or built one month per year so requests must be made to the local chief to acquire a new bure if wishing to expand. The walls are typically woven or sometimes thatched with bark. Whilst mats are woven by women, the walls are woven by men.          		 A man enjoys a cigarette in between rounds of kava with friends. Kava, though traditionally drank at ceremonies or important occasions, is a social activity that many do in Navala to pass the time. As a subsistence farming based community, most men work on the ranch or farm to provide for their family. On afternoons off, such as this one, it is not uncommon for groups of individuals to gather in a bure (traditional Fijian house) and have a few rounds of kava whilst exchanging jokes to unwind.: by devonhanna, Views[612]
