It was hosted by a football-mad optometrist who turned his shop into a smoke-filled bar for the round robin evening.          		 The English Gardens in the middle of the city. A river flows quickly under the adjacent buildings into the park; a permanent wave appears; you grab a board and surf it (to the bemused gaze of onlookers).
