Thwarted!

Fri, 1 Jun 2007 | By alyssa_schwartz | Views [946] | Comments [1]

It´s official: we are STUCK in Chile. We attempted to leave San Pedro today and sat on a still bus for 3 hours, hoping the highway would open.  Apparently there has been heavy snow in the Andes so the pass we need to drive through to get to Salta, Argentina is ... Read more >

Stuck in the Chilean desert

Thu, 31 May 2007 | By alyssa_schwartz | Views [911]

I suppose there are worse things than being stuck in San Pedro de Atacama.  The sun is shining, the food and coffee is quite good and it feels familiar, almost like a mini Santa Fe, New Mexico.  But when you have four days to kill and not much to do ... Read more >

Rod Stewart is to Easter Island as Tom Jones is to El Conti.

Wed, 30 May 2007 | By homersmuse | Views [3208] | Comments [1]

My week long trip to Easter Island began with the appropriate apparel: adventure clothes. You know...extra-heavy-duty-gortex hiking boots, fannypacks, cowboy hats, and camoufloge bandanas, all of which feature super-duper-quick-dry technology. My travel ... Read more >

The Amazon was really relaxing and HOT! We saw heaps of different animals like, iguanas, sloths, anacondas, snakes, pink dolphins, heaps of birds and caught and ate paranas and cat fish. We stayed in a jungle lodge and did treks through the jungle and ... Read more >

Ranting About the Infamous Transantiago

Fri, 25 May 2007 | By homersmuse | Views [1525]

Maybe you've heard of Transantiago. It's a new citywide bus/metro system that has recently been put into place. It has had so many flukes that supposedly it even made the national news in the US of A! I won't bore you with the details, but here is ... Read more >

Una flor?

Thu, 24 May 2007 | By homersmuse | Views [1069]

Classes at La Catolica are going ok. I've had a hard time getting excited about my classes this semester, which is weird for me because normally I'm enthusiastic about my classes at least at the beginning of the semester. My Chilean Anthropology class ... Read more >

The desert

Sun, 13 May 2007 | By shannon-andy | Views [758] | Comments [2]

We decided to go to the desert as some backpackers were talking about their stories of the north of Chile and we saw some great photos. We landed in Calama and then got a bus for 2 hours to San Pedro which is a little town filled with dirt roads, tourists, ... Read more >

Valpo

Sun, 13 May 2007 | By shannon-andy | Views [627]

Valparaiso is a sea side port about 1 1/2 hours bus ride from Santiago. We stayed in a lovely hostel for 2 nights which had a cute little balcony that over-looked the street. The locals live on a big hill that surrounds the town in a horseshoe shape.... Read more >

Young monks at Paro Monastery - Two young monks, selling religious amulets and lucky charms, laugh at something my mother asked them. Usually very shy, especially when surrounded by women who point cameras at them, these two couldn't resist after a few minutes of us imploring them to answer a few questions that they thought were absolutely unnecessary or were not difficult enough to be questions. Monk training is very gruelling and requires a great amount of strength. Even the Dalai Lama once admitted he wanted to run away during the course of his monk education. So it is very rare to see them laugh like this, especially the younger ones.: by kavyanjali, Views[1318]
