Unaware of any mining in the Flinders Ranges, my friend and I came across this lookout after a highway sign with the words 'Leigh Creek Coal Mine tourist lookout' grabbed our attention.

On arriving at the viewing area we were confined by a chain link fence that stood 10ft high. Committed to capturing a clear shot, I asked my friend if I could jump on his shoulders to take the photo.

This photograph shows us a minuscule section of the open cut coal mine, which removes 2.5 million tonnes of coal each year. Bewildered by this massive pit in the earth, we stood amazed for almost an hour.: by hailey-lane, Views[745]
