         		 As our trip took place towards the end of winter, we were able to see some plum blossoms blooming as spring was commencing. This is cause for celebration indeed after the long cold months that the Japanese had just been through.          		 Walking across a bridge of a stream from the lake gave us an excellent view of three swans that swam past underneath us. Just as I was walking away, I noticed the brilliant reflection of the sun right on the surface of the water where one of the swans was resuming its nap.          		 I spotted these fishermen sitting together with their rods at this little stream exiting the lake. As Caucasian foreigners such as my brother and myself are still rather unusual in Japan, particularly in smaller neighbourhood areas such as these, one of them looked up at us, chuckled and pointed us out to his friends. One can only guess what his remark was, but it could have been along the lines of, “Eh? Gaigen!” (the Japanese word for foreigner).          		 It used to be one of the most polluted lakes in Japan, but has since been cleaned by a sophisticated system, the name of which lies in the kanji (Chinese characters) behind the lady’s head. She is walking her dog, rugged up in an insulated jacket typical of those worn by the Japanese in winter, and is wearing a facemask. This is worn either as a courtesy to others when sick, or as a preventative measure of avoiding catching illnesses, particularly in the winter months. : by sarahdenim, Views[396]
     
    Lake Teganuma, located in the Chiba Prefecture near Tokyo, is a popular walking, fishing, running and general recreation spot for the Japanese that live nearby. This lake is situated very close to the first house that I lived in with my Australian mother and American father in Abiko. Cold, bleak and rather serene, I visited this place when winter was nearing its end.          		 (5) Unfortunately many of the “geisha” tourists think they see on the streets turn out to be tourists themselves – for a fairly modest price one can have a “geisha experience” where they are dressed up in traditional kimono and made up so they can wander the streets of Gion for a couple of hours. It’s a poignant thought that this trade is booming when the numbers of geisha themselves dwindle and the “floating world” they’re said to exist in will soon sink.: by irinaearnshaw, Views[1043]
         		 (4) Shirakawa canal in Gion, Kyoto. One would be forgiven for thinking you were in a small town in the mountains – the stone bridges crossing the river to the ryokan (traditional Japanese inns) and the wind in the trees give a quiet and picturesque atmosphere in the hustle and bustle of the city.          		 (3) In a nearby temple I encountered a group of schoolkids saying “ohayoo” (good morning) to the koi fish, and wondered if in 10 years time any of them would become geisha. In the 1800s many girls would be trained as “Maiko” from as young as 9, and would be taught elegant dances, how to play traditional Japanese instruments and “the art of conversation”.          		 (2) As I sifted through the beautiful hand-painted and embroidered silks she told me about how, many years ago, she would sometimes buy, sell or repair kimono from the Okiya (the geisha houses in the Gion District of Kyoto), but hadn’t for many years.          		 Tokyo, one of the most fascinating cities in the world with one of the most tangled and extensive subway systems. My home for six months. How could I get to know this metropolis without understanding and taming the mysterious bloodstream running through its veins? At first I thought of this project as a documentation of my trips and emotions associated with the novelty of the city, culture and people. There were a lot of amazements, fun, confusion, but under a colorful mixture of the past and the future I saw also something more profound. An inner life of the city.
