         		 Minitan is a small community in Oaxaca. Most of its habitants are Afro-Mexicans, even though they don’t define themselves as such. In Mexico African-descent people were not considered as as a distinct ethnic group (unlike the indigenous) because over the years they had lost much of their identity and traditions. They are allowed to fish commercially only 4 months a year, but they continue to fish the rest of the year for family consumption.
