    The arid environments of Australia tell many unique stories. They tell of ancient landscapes, of survival and of unforgiving elements.          		 2.20 pm On the road between Winton and Longreach. Almost every animal sighted on the ride had met a grisly end via a truck bumper providing an easy lunch for the waiting birds.          		 7.47pm Renner Springs Roadhouse. This Road train had just pulled up for the night and the owner cranked up its generator which scared a flock of birds, one of which is in the picture. Even when stopped the road trains are an imposing figure.     3.30 pm Mataranka: In the heat of the day which was nearing 50 degrees this kangaroo was trying to keep cool by resting under the pool table.     This is a traditional Aboriginal cave painting at Injalak Hill, 5kms west of Gunbalanya in Arnhem Land, NT. Painted with white and red ochre this painting is believed to be over 10,000 years old. Hand stencils are very common in Aboriginal rock painting, this particular one is considered very rare due to the detail added into what would normally be negative space.: by arnhemland, Views[1000]

         		 Aboriginal elder Garry Djorlom learnt how to hunt and gather food provided by the land from his father, Dudley Djorlom and his uncles. Walking through the scrub with Garry he would point out and name different trees in his traditional language (Kunwinjku). Occasionally he would stop to pick some fruit “I’m going to take these back to my grand kids” he would say, with an earnest smile.: by arnhemland, Views[1927]
         		 Once surrounded by ancient seas, the iconic Arnhem Land escarpment or “stone country” is a great example of the relationship between Aboriginal people and the land. During the wet season this sandstone wall is transformed into a plentiful oasis, brimming with fish and birds to hunt.     Garry Djorlom is an Aboriginal elder from Oenpelli, Western Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Australia. He’s a softly spoken character with a warm, friendly nature. Like many Aboriginal elders, he’s also a storyteller. “If you have a story, don’t put it in your pocket and leave it there, take it out and share it with your family”.          		 One the way back to Wilpena Pound one evening the moon was going down. The tree in the dip of the perimeter of the pound stood out. It is by the light of the silvery moon. It was so serene and the night sky was amazing with very bright stars. I think it was nature showing a softer side of the Flinders Ranges but the tree by itself, also emphasised the isolation of the area.          		 This tree along the creek bed captured me from the moment I saw it. It looks like the trunk of a person (no arms of course!). It is a weathered trunk; something that has stood the test of time and seemingly will continue to do so. Is this nature's construction and way of bringing pseudo human life into the area?          		 This photo of a tree in the river bed draws me in. The tree has its arms up. Is it welcoming me or keeping me away and protecting the trees further down the creek bed. Its sturdiness and grandeur cannot be ignored. Through floods and the carving of its trunk by gushing water, and no doubt fires and anything else nature can throw at it, it still stands tall and proud.          		 Sunrise at Razor Back lookout. The name sounds harsh, but the beauty of the range which cannot be understated, softens it. The meandering road leading to the distant mountain range makes you feel connected to it. The vast landscape, however, makes you realise how isolated the area can be. It's an interesting juxtaposition of feelings when you're standing there, at dawn, admiring the beauty, but feeling very small and isolated. A kangaroo jumped across the road when we were there.          		 There are many ruins around the Flinders Ranges like this old house. British migrants settled here to eek out a living sheep farming and the like.          		 As teenagers we were aware of the town’s perceived ugliness. We could see it formalized in the built environment and we could feel it harboured in the attitudes of many of the residents.     This series of photographs investigates altered perceptions of place over time. Every time I re-visit the town I grew up in it feels different. The modest suburban town has always been of lower socio-economic value and hasn’t been able to shake its abrasive reputation.     After a long walk out, on the road to 1770, I took a turn and headed towards a quiet beach. I walked back quietly along the ever eroding beach, with trees uprooted all the way along, from the 3 bad storms lasting 4-10 days each, in just 5 - 6 weeks. What a difference a day or 2 makes!          		 Brisbane, Aust: The Treasury Building, completed in 1928, has now been converted to a casino in 1995. Each phase of construction (there were 3 phases) uses a different type of sandstone. The red flood lights surround the building highlighting it against the rest of the city.          		 Brisbane, Aust: Wheel of Brisbane providing great views of the night skyline. At 60 metres high it provides a great panorama of the Brisbane skyline. I will have to take a ride at night to see as I have seen it during the day.
