         		 During the Whey-ah-Wichen Canoe Festival, kids 10 or younger have the opportunity to compete against each other to earn cash prices.          		 One of the key elements in the Nation’s plan to bring canoe racing back is the Whey-ah-Wichen Canoe Festival, a two-day competition in which Aboriginal people from all along the West Coast of North America compete in canoe races.     Through hundreds of years of colonialism and exploitation, Aboriginal people —or as they’re called in Canada, First Nations— have experienced the steady loss of their traditions and culture. One of those traditions is war canoe racing. Paddling competitions were vital for Aboriginal people after British settlement because they allowed them to circumvent the prohibition to gather in large groups. In the past few decades, though, canoe racing has faded due to Aboriginal migration to cities. Regardless, there are those who still fight for the survival of traditions.          		 After the injunction was granted, protestors did whatever they could to prevent Kinder Morgan from working.          		 Towards the end of August 2014, Kinder Morgan Energy illegally cut down 13 Red Alders in the Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area, in my hometown of Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. They did this to drill a bore hole, so that they could do surveys to expand the Trans Mountain Pipeline, right through Burnaby Mountain.          		 Once in the water, the parent calls the chick until the family is reunited. The male then stays with the chick for about 8 weeks, feeding it and teaching it to feed and look after itself. The pair swims south, joining huge rafts of birds, and the group is eventually reunited with the females. Brunnich's guillemots live at sea except during the breeding season.: by beelover, Views[672]
         		 Brunnich's guillemot chicks are fed by both parents for 18-25 days. Then they have to make a leap of faith from high up on the cliff to the water below. When the chick jumps, a parent, usually the male, follows immediately and shadows the chick on its descent. Unable to fly, the chick spreads its wings and feet to give it some sort of gliding ability. Sometimes the second parent also follows to make sure all is well.: by beelover, Views[630]
         		 The availability of real estate on the cliff is very limited with only a few narrow ledges offering suitable sites. Birds nest in a dense, cacophonous crowd. The noise has to be heard to be believed. Perhaps it is fortunate that Brunnich's guillemots require less than 1 square foot per bird. Eggs are laid on the bare rock, their shape preventing them from rolling off. Adults have to land precisely when returning to their nest.: by beelover, Views[665]
