4. The storm closes in. Until the 1920s, Lake Huron's piscine food chain was ruled by the lake trout, which fed on the plankton-eating cisco. When the lake was invaded by smelt, alewives, and sea lampreys, the trout were brought to the edge of extinction. In the 1980s, Chinook salmon were imported from the West Coast but now the alewives they eat have dwindled. 3. A snug harbour in the Saugeen River for Just-n-Time, one of the last commercial gillnet fishing boats on Lake Huron. Huron is second only to Lake Erie for commercial fishing in the Great Lakes, but there is conflict between recreational fishing and the Saugeen Ojibway First Nation, whose lands are on the south shore of the Lake and the adjacent Georgian Bay.
