    From about 1-3am in Reykjavik, the sky turns a beautiful shade of blue.: by leholt, Views[391]
         		 On a sunny summer day in Reykjavik, I spotted a few locals catching some rays.: by leholt, Views[344]
         		 Puffins are busy preparing their breeding caves, although one of them stays curiously watching us as we take the photo. The bird is not endangered much by many terrestrial predators therefore it stays calm and fearless.: by annadal, Views[345]
         		 The same cliff is a home to another bird – the Atlantic Puffin. It is known for being a skilled diver being able to submerge even up to a minute. The legs are short and set well back on the body giving the bird its upright stance on land. The photo shows a male and female at the beginning of the breeding season.          		 At the cliff Dyrhólaey the sun is soon reaching its lowest point hiding behind a nearby glacier. This Northern Fulmar was standing in a very strong wind near by the cliff observing. It was fascinating to watch the birds skill opposing the force of the wind.: by annadal, Views[349]
     
    This photography was taken at the cliffs of the peninsula Snæfellsnes. It is full of nesting Kittiwakes, which belong to the gull family. In the top left corner of the photo one can see a colony of an commonly met bird Auk (most probably Thin-billed Murre), which shares a lot of its looks and habits with penguins, although they are not related. Auks live on the open sea and only come to land for breeding on rocky cliff shores. The breeding birds leave white traces on a monotonic yellow-grey rocky surface adding structure and making it an unexpectedly an interesting sight.: by annadal, Views[583]
         		 Iceland lies in the North Atlantic on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. It is a place where ice meets fire - it is volcanic active and around 11% of the land is covered by glaciers. The volcanic ground offers hard life conditions. Most of the island is uninhabited. Iceland is the most sparsely populated country in Europe (with an average of around three inhabitants per square kilometre) and around one third of the population is living in the countries capital. Before human arrival the only mammal living on the island was the Arctic Fox. An important part in animal life take birds. Although before human arrival to Iceland the island was extensively forested now the sight of a tree is rare. This is unfavourable for many bird species. But the long coastline offers a lot of space for breeding for many kinds of birds.          		 These mountains were formed during a volcanic eruption about 10 000 years ago. The ryolite stone taints the mountains red, and the minerals emerging from the hot-springs colored the ground yellow,red and green. The diverse geology of the mountains drove me into a spectacular flow of colours and a dramatic surnatural fairy landscape, where you can feel Earth alive. With these photographs, i wanted to capture my ambiguous feeling this landscape turn me into. Indeed, even if it is an unliveable place, desertic and far from civilization, life is here latent and organic.          		 This area of the Highlands is one of the best unspoiled gems, it's one of the most active geothermal areas in Iceland, where you can see splashing mud puddles, vents through which the earth breath angrily, hot springs, rivulets, fog, steams..          		 The mountain used to have a small glacier, now melted away. This glacier was very popular for summer skiing. In year 2000, all the ski lifts were disassambled due to climate change and the glaciers' retreat.     These 4 pictures have been taken in Kerlingarfjöll which is a mountain range in the middle of the Icelandic Highlands, reach by Road 35 (S-W of the Hofsjökull glacier) only 3 or 4 month per year. ''Fjöll' means mountains and 'Kerling' means old lady ( in a sense of 'witch'). The name of the area, inspired by ancient folk tales, come from a 25m high volcanic tuff stone pillar. It is said that an old troll lady was caught out by the sunrise and therefore turned to stone. The area was hardly ever visited before the past century both because it was very remote, but also because it was thought to be the homeland of trolls and the only people that would venture there were thieves and outlaws.: by guillaumefandel, Views[1037]

Despite the fact that sperm whales are rather abundant and although their range covers almost all oceans, their anatomy and behavior still hold quite a few secrets.          		 The carcass of a male sperm whale that washed ashore at Snaefellsnes Peninsula in spring 2012. These whales can grow up to 20 metres in length and weigh over 55 tons. Their species is the largest living toothed animal and the deepest diving mammal on earth. The white scars on many sperm whales' heads are believed to come from fights with giant squids that are one of their primary preys.          		 In April 2012 the rugged shoreline of Snaefellsnes National Park became the scene for another extraordinary event. As if the volcano had spit out one of Jules Verne's fictitious creatures, the carcass of one of the most fascinating and mysterious ocean animals of our times had beached right at the bottom of the snow-covered, incandescent peak of Snaefellsjökull.
