The city of Lyon used to be a Roman city (I forget it's name), and these are the ruins of the old amphitheatre. As a matter of fact, the roman influence is where the "Fouviere" gets its name. Where it stands used to be the forum for the city. Then something happened and they had to move it down the hill. The spot became known as "Forum vieux" or "old forum," which got shortened in time to "Fouvier". Allen told me that, so if it's wrong, it's his fault.
