Despite being one of the oldest canals in Europe it is still in use, although the users nowadays are made up of tourists rather than transport. In 1996 it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I noticed this private garden as I crossed a small back-alley bridge. I couldn't help but smile what with the overpowering growth intermingled with a quiet and quaint branch off the main canal. No matter where I walked - over a bridge, along a canal, sitting by the water's edge, there was a gondolier and his gondola, taking lovebirds or a giddy group of friends drinking up the beautiful sights on their tour. I saw this unmanned gondola and stopped to admire the detail of its craftsmanship.
