4. The storm closes in. Until the 1920s, Lake Huron's piscine food chain was ruled by the lake trout, which fed on the plankton-eating cisco. When the lake was invaded by smelt, alewives, and sea lampreys, the trout were brought to the edge of extinction. In the 1980s, Chinook salmon were imported from the West Coast but now the alewives they eat have dwindled. Huron is second only to Lake Erie for commercial fishing in the Great Lakes, but there is conflict between recreational fishing and the Saugeen Ojibway First Nation, whose lands are on the south shore of the Lake and the adjacent Georgian Bay. This 81-hectare island was made a bird sanctuary in 1957 and is home to gulls and great blue herons as well as migratory birds. The lighthouse is one of six nearly identical Imperial lighthouses constructed between 1855 and 1859. The newly exposed shoreline and receding water levels are shocking but the lighthouse still promises safety in a storm.
